NERF all the units!

Well, now that the mandatory words are out ;) I've got a question.

So far, I've played 4 online games and won 2. I really enjoy this game. Haven't encountered a spam tactic yet thankfully. And love the tactics and strategies involved. And the coop games are a lot of fun as well! (2 vs 2)

Today I played a 2 vs 2 2000 pts, hells highway as PACT. We were on the winning side by 200 almost all game and it was fun. The opponents didn't seem to do much (made me wonder the entire game :P) until they showed up with 4 abrams (can't remember the type) and 4 challengers (can't remember the type).

I had 5 T72's, 4 T64's and some random T62's with 2 attack choppers (first tier) that can also transport stuff :P But couldn't get a dent on 'm. I was positioned in a hedgerow and even called in Arty on those 8 tanks. Think I only killed one.

Cost us the game. I retreated as soon as I lost most of my T72's, called in some more and tried again from the right flank. Challengers positioned there in the mean time so I lost the game because of that rush/attack.

What is the right way of attacking higher tier units (in this situation)? Retreat and set up a multi flank ambush? Get some tank destroyers? Let them roll in to ATGM teams? I was hoping I could at least get 2 or even 3 out of the 8 tanks. I'm not crying OP here, just want to know what would have been a nice way. I glanced over my allies flank and it didn't seem he had anything to take care of those tanks so I chose to counter attack.

Challengers are slow. Very slow. Try it with arty (until they rout) and ATGMs, this is how mine get beaten.

Those tanks seriously outclass tanks like T64s and T62s. I don't consider it unrealistic for them to knock out 4 or so of them for every 1 of theirs.

I would do a retreat and surround them in the meantime. Since your tanks can't compete with them on fair terms, try flanking them. Keep the M1s and Challenger 2s busy on their front by drawing them into a cheap infantry ambush, or stun them using gunships or better artillery. Then hit them on the sides with the weaker tanks.

Drawing the enemy in and over-stretching them is something I enjoy doing, but it relies on being able to micro-manage and having quick enough units to take advantage of it.

Challengers are built to take a beating, the Abrams do too but not like Challys IMO. Flanking works much better on Leopards and T-80s then Abrams/Challengers, as they still have 7/8 side armor, but it's still worth trying, especially if you can get behind them.

Try gathering good ATGM platforms, T-55AMV-1s, Mt-LBs, etc. Try and volley off 3-6 vehicles worth at once, preferably 4-8. If your lucky 3-4 will hit and kill one outright, (the Mt-LBs preferably with their 11 missile) and/or knock one down far enough the next volley gets him. If they have repair vehicles on top of them it's going to take a hell of a lot of missiles so the key is to land the volley as a volley. They will only do 1-2 damage a shot using 10 AP missiles, hence the value of the 11 AP.

If they advance on you here then try and back up somewhat, they enter the range of your lighter tanks and other units, which on top of the ATGMs should get their morale to shake some. If you have arty grinding away at them they'll likely break before they do too much damage, and you need to exploit it.

Against a competent player though your probably going to be catching mortar fire and the like, and nothing is guaranteed.

Also, do not underestimate the late model T-64s and T-80s, they pack a punch all of their own. Auto-loaders in this game don't bring very many disadvantages (like my AI crew getting their limbs torn off).

you could stun them with arty and rush them with infantry that can get in close and overwhelm them. Tank destroyers with ATGMs farther back will also help. ATGM teams in general will do well. I rarely bother trying to face them head on with my own armour.

Let them get closer to you before you let them see your units - such as having your tanks a bit deeper into the treeline and then moving them out. Your AP goes up the closer you are . Even basic T72s with their 7 AP gun have no problem penetrating front Challenger/Abrams armour at 100m range. Same goes for mid tier tanks in the field; anything that gets close enough will penetrate no problem, flanking will help.

Personally, though, I prefer infantry. 4 cheap units in 4 APCs (Motostrelci, Motostrelki, whatever) rushing at a couple of Abrams and unloading in their face will generally do it (I normally go with a ratio of 2 APCs:1 big tank minimum, but preferably 4). Do this at the same time as hitting them with arty (Buratino or otherwise) or peppering them with Helo rockets to stun them, or ATGMs from cheap ATGM units to do more damage, and they will die. Remember they cost around 140-160 apiece depending on tank, so you can throw a lot of stuff at them and still come out on top.

t-62m's and t-55mv's for their ATGM, plus other ATGM as mentioned here. Force the challys and abrams to move to you, this helps you to flank if your lines are wide enough. Fall back a bit in the center before they get in gun range, and loop your flanks around to their rear.

If they lacked air, then rocket them to get stun/routs.

You can stun them and then charge. A couple of flame tanks in range (have to move up to 1km away[omg 1km flame? yes, it's 1050m. That may be a tad bit unrealistic]) will keep them permastunned/routed, and then you can kill them at your leisure.

APC rush will also work.

Using a burrito is also very effective to get your forces in range, as it's pretty much a guaranteed stun at closer ranges.

Awesome tips. Thanks a lot.

lol didn't know Challenger had one type. I thought I could unlock 3 upgrades for them as well.

In this game they didn't had any air cover and they only had one missile arty unit sitting in there main-base. So I had all the room to play with the tanks. But the problem is we where only 100/200 points away from a defeat.

Thanks tho! I can work with this ^_^

UAZ + FAGOT is good against high tier tanks, I managed to beat off 4x Abrams + 4x Leo2 + some AA assault with 12 UAZ Fagots, couple a T-62Ms, 4 cheap arty guns and one Mi-2 recon. The combined point value of my force was around ½ of theirs and yet I won.
