The problem with ranked matches is that some players don't want to loose points and therefore, after a few games they stop playing ranked. That's why I really like the trackmania² point system.
First of all, there is no distinction between ranked and non-ranked, every race is taken into account.
At each race you earn points depending on your time, from +00 to +thousands of points.
Note that you don't loose points, so no fear of going down the ladder if it's not your day.
Of course, the higher you are in the ladder, the harder it is to get points.
For the same time, some players earn +500 and others only +10.
On WEE, a mix between this and the elo system could work nice.
At every game, the looser and winner could win points (no loosing points) depending on the game and the opponents.
The winner team, if higher ranked than the loosing team, wins very few points, and a lot if otherwise.
The loosing team would always earn very few points, usually they would get +00 points but in some cases, if the opponents really are higher ranked, they could still earn a few points if they managed to resist a little (only a minor victory for instance).
I hope it isn't to late...
I think the main problem is: In other RTS-Games the ranked game is the most important part of the multiplayer (total war, starcraft 2), but in WEE it's only "addition" to the normal hosted games.
PS: Sry for my bad english.
