So, I've been trying to incorporate more infantry into my strategies and I've come across a question: What purpose do the rifle squads serve? It seems that, because of the small role infantry currently plays, having an infantry unit that exists solely to counter other infantry units is redundant. I mean, I know they usually come with LAWs, which allows them to sort of fill an AT role, but getting them within 700 meters of enemy armor can be very risky and not worth the losses if there isn't cover around, especially considering that actual AT infantry has much greater range and more tank-busting power. Also, as far as AA goes, their smallarms can't even be used against helos, so that's out of the question, too. I really don't see their use. Of the 8 hours I've put into the game (beta included), they've only been helpful once, and it was when defending AA and AT teams deep behind enemy lines (air drops! ). All other times, they've left me wishing I had invested in more AT or AA teams.

What do you use rifle squads for? What am I doing wrong?

Put them in woods.
A tank that pass by within 700 meters will be annihilated without even knowing what the hell hit it.

That's how you use infantry.
Some rifle squads has better AT at a higher price.
Some infantry is simply better against other infantry making them less vulnerable to infantry attacks in those woods.

It depends how much you wish to pay for an infantry squad.

Infantry in the open less than 700meters are basically dead meat if you don't have anything else to draw their fire. That being said, cheap infantry can be used as screens for your more expensive units that you don't want to take fire from.

You can also use them to rush expensive armor. If I catch Abrams sitting still or in a forest I'll rush forward my apcs with just regular infantry, unload point blank and I profit 100+ points.

That being said infantry really seem to only belong in the woods, and certain maps favor infantry more than others, if the map doesn't have enough hedges or forests, I would shy away from standard infantry on maps that are more open and instead opt for AT teams which have that increased range and tanks. But in the forest, infantry are king.

I was in a 1v1 tonight where the other guy tried to sneak 12 T-62's thru some woods on me. He ran right into 4 squads of infantry in those woods. While the infantry got wiped the points were WAY in my advantage and what tanks were left high tailed it back the way they came.

Next he scouted with 4 helos and they ran right over the IFV's the infantry had been in about a thousand meters back.

What a blast

Infantry can use small arms against helicopters, by the way. I had a mob of forty East Germans sneak through a forest to take out that pesky recon chopper, they took it down in about two seconds of fire.

Yeah they are soft counters to helos, but if the chopper engages out of your range you better pray that they run out of ammo before you do men.

Just saying you can do it, not that you should rely on it :P

Infantry even in woods is food for 20mm IFVs.

Lies.
If you have quality infantry like legion famas your 20mm ifv will be blown before it has time to fire.
