I play RTS for the game mechanics, couldnt care less about purty (and expensive) videos. And in gameplay W:EE beats every other RTS i have played by miles.

That's...great of you to mention, but we were talking about which RTS have more plot than WEE.

What I'm saying is, WiC still had more plot than wargame.

Story in W:EE is told from different perspective than in WiC but is it more? You don't have plot about soldiers looking batteries for their CD player, that's for sure... You are a general, commanding your forces and the best you have is news above the screen. Eugen could do different, more action-like, cinematics but if they would be like in WIC I am glad they didn't. Some appreciate that ascetic approach... I appreciate that we have campaigns from two sides of conflict, not the second one, later... in DLC.

Exactly, they could've done more, but they didn't. I don't blame them, but this does indeed show that whoever said that W:EE has the best campaign out there simply hasn't played many RTS.

The RTS with the best campaign/story of all time was HOMEWORLD (the one and only). The manual was a pre-game novel for god's sake!

In terms of campaign/story-driven RTS there is no other.....

The absolutely ingenius thing about Homeworld was that eventhough the gameplay was so tied to the campaign/story it did not feel linear or restrictive at all. I played so many mission so completely differently than my buddies that it was cool to sometimes share savegames around to see just how this person did this or that. Try that in any of the really campaign/story-driven games of today. For me the so called "story driven" games of today (in any genre) feel utterly restrictive and I feel like someone is trying to hold my hand..........lame......

Cygnus mentions AOE, originally produced by Microsoft but later designed and produced by Ensemble Studios. I believe starting with Age of Kings, Ensemble opened their programming and anyone who could wade thru the programming could write scenarios and campaigns. There were some REALLY talented modders who did a fantastic job at creating those games including music, voice, and imagery. Sad to see it fade out. And it could all be done on computers several generations previous to what we have today...

WiC had Whitesnake on the soundtrack.

WiC wins by default.

W:EE campaign causes you to actually have to understand the times and kinda assumes that the player already knows the backdrop of the Cold War I think that adding a story would have taken the campaign back actually. W:EE kinda gives you the perspective of a general in the War room, who gets a phone call at 3am and gets told holy crap the russians did this and this is how we are going to respond and deal with the operation as it happens

I think the last west Germany mission was amazing peace talks are about to begin but the Soviets are trying to breakthrough and control more territory to have a bargining chip so that the talks hold in their favor. (which is a common tactic in war politics) I don't need a cinematic to show me that the Soviet general in charge of that operation is in deep poo or probably gonna commit suicide because of his failure

The cold war is such an interesting time in world history it's a shame at least in US schools that it isn't talked about much or if it is talked about it's looked at only in episodes like the Vietnam and Korean war where there was so much back drop outside of just those wars
